When it comes to celebrating World Environment Day, United Utilities sets an example for businesses across the UK.
The multi-utility company team up with Groundwork each year to make real improvements to local neighbourhoods. This year, teams from UU worked on three sites in the Northwest. Staff took part in activities such as creating new nature habitats, woodland planting, willow weaving and developing a community orchard.
The practical work had a triple benefit – for local people, for nature – and for the United Utilities business, as the day was used as a teambuilding initiative.
Helen Norris, Head of Corporate Responsibility for United Utilties said: "We have a fantastic partnership with Groundwork called United Futures. These activities provide a great opportunity to improve team working and our employees love to get involved with activities that have a positive impact on the environment."
Liverpool
UU staff visited St Paschal Baylon Catholic Primary School where they helped to install four pergolas and raised beds. This will give children somewhere to learn about growing food and transform the school grounds.
Oldham
Coal carts returned to a former colliery site after 75 years - in the form of willow sculptures. Volunteers also removed trees and debris at the Jubilee Nature Reserve in Shaw.
Warrington
At Victoria Park orchard, UU staff created a framework of timber and wire supports for fruit trees and bushes to be trained upon. The Orchard is a project that aims to increase healthy eating and offer horticultural therapy.
The World Environment Day activity is part of United Futures – the regeneration partnership between Groundwork and United Utilities.
